Childhood Phantoms
20/06/23
The smell of hot tea freshly made in the morning
Plates laid out on the table, food fully prepped
The warm presence of my grandmother
The love she shared with my grandfather
The smell of nature at the farm
The feeling of youth in my heart
Running around with leaves cracking under my feet
The cool air around me, it sings
Asking the flowers if he loves me… not
One day someone will love you they respond
The drive back home, a song on the radio
My brother fast asleep in the seat beside me
My grandmothers hands gently caressing us
With her gentle prayers, thus protecting us
My grandfathers stories of bravery and justice
Stories and stories, oh how I loved them
Back at home my mother greets us
Rushing us to bed, complaining of the smell of the adventures that had found us
Off to bed with a fairytale
A bedtime kiss and then sleep we met
Fast asleep I’d dream of my coming days of glory
Once upon a time I’d have my very own stories
Wish for the future I have today
I hope she knows how proud she’d be someday
